Colin G. Calloway's history of the American West before Lewis and Clark, told from the Native side. It runs from the earliest peoples through the arrival of horses, guns and European empires to around 1800, showing a West that was already old, crowded and changing long before the expedition. The title comes from winter counts, the pictorial calendars Plains peoples kept of each year's events.
